I am a strong believer in unconventional assessment. I believe learning
should be fun for students and that by allowing them to explore mediums in different ways to show what they've learned we can assess their knowledge
without the pressure of testing. There are several different ways to
assess learning and many of those resources can be found online
(several sites listed under helpful websites). Students can create
books, animations, quizzes and many other things to show what they
know.
Here is a story bird I created about our feelings. Students can use
this site to create online journals about a given topic. This is a
great alternative to a test. Can also be used for group collaboration
projects and provides a fun and unique way for students to share
information with peers. Story bird can also help create classroom stories
to share with friends and family to keep them updated as to what is
going on in the classroom!
There are many resources on the internet that students can use
and adapt to any given project. Teacher creativity is key!
I also believe in clear instruction. Students should know before hand what is to be expected of them. By demonstrating before hand as well as providing a tangible rubric that outlines what they are to do will help to ensure all students are successful. For those students who are English language learners or have different learning styles it is important to provide information in different ways.
