Almost every job I've had has been working with children, starting with babysitting, until where I am now, student teaching in a preschool.  Once becoming old enough to work with children on my own, I began to work within a church nursery. After awhile, I began to teach Sunday school for grades K-2 and also led VBS (Vacation Bible School) for three summers, which was open to all ages. These experiences allowed me to use creativity to incorporate activities that made learning more meaningful for students. I also spent time as a student teacher in the preschool at my high school for three years and have experience with the Beaverton school district as an assistant teacher at Ridgewood Elementary in an after school program. For REACH, their after school program,I became certified in CPR, child abuse and neglect, first aid, and obtained a food handler's permit, as well as went through a background check. REACH provided K-5 students a safe place to stay while parents worked. Currently, I'm a full-time undergraduate at the University of Oregon and have spent the last two years focusing on the educational foundations major. I've also been student teaching at the Vivian Olum Child Development Center since April 2008. I've met some really incredible students and families, and learned a lot about the profession and what it means to be a teacher. Working at the center for so long, I've dealt with difficult situations in regards to teaching. Having these experiences has better prepared me for teaching, and has helped shape the way I look at teaching, students and their families.

My greatest strength, is that I've always been able to connect with and engage children in meaningful ways. I believe that my creative and hands-on approach to teaching helps cater to different learning styles, while at the same time making learning more rewarding for the students. I love planning different activities based on what the children seem to be interested in that day. When you develop activities in this way, students truly appreciate the attentiveness you bring to their needs. As a future teacher, I want to incorporate my passion for teaching, as well as my childlike energy into my teaching. I have made it a point to learn about different learning styles and students needs to better facilitate their learning. I have taken Spanish classes, ASL classes as well as special education classes to ensure that I have some training in each area in hopes to better assist my students.Through mutual learning, I seek to truly know my students and engage them in ways that challenge what they already know by not only paying attention to what they would like to learn, but precisely how they learn.

Through my teaching, I have come to appreciate the unique qualities each child possesses. Learning these unique personalities, leaves me excited to return the next day, as each day presents a new learning opportunity for both the students and myself. This excitement I hold seems to be infectious, as the children are genuinely ecstaticeach time I enter the classroom. My hope, is to extend that reciprocating enthusiasm into my own future classroom.
